Instructions for Semester Extra Credit

SocialMediaIconcollageThere’s a reason why I provide Extra Credit opportunities for this class. It certainly is a great way to earn a few extra points especially if you feel you are falling a bit behind or if you want to definitely secure that A if you are already doing pretty well.

The most important thing for me is not just your grade. Here are my objectives and instructions to achieve extra points for this class.

Objectives

  1. To allow students to advance their learning by contextualizing concepts learned in class.
  2. To promote students’ ability to take initiative in their own learning and at their own pace by providing them opportunities to explore, research and discover new things on their own.
  3. To provide students opportunities to excel.

ALL EXTRA CREDIT MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE DECEMBER 6

Extra Credit Projects

1. New Social Media Tools

Overview

Research and discover new and emerging social media tools to help leverage online communications tactics with the groundswell. Students will identify new social media tools and platforms and share them with the class. Tools may not include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, Tumblr or LinkedIn. Students have the opportunity to present up to 3 tools this semester. Each presentation is worth 5 points.

Instructions

  1. When a student identifies a new and emerging social media tool, they will first email me at dmaguigad@colum.edu and provide me the following information:  The name of the tool, why they think it can leverage tactics with the groundswell, and whether or not they have been using the tool.
  2. Once the tool is approved, I will give you a specific date to present your new tool to the class. It will most likely be at the beginning of the following session.
  3. Present your tool to the class. You have between 3 to 5 minutes (no more than 5 minutes) to present the tool, how it works, which social technograhic profile it benefits the most and how you think it can be used to leverage communication with the groundswell for a business or organization.
